At-Speed Balancing 

At-speed balancing significantly reduces the likelihood of costly and time-consuming field balancing.

We can monitor:

  • Displacement in several points along the body of the rotor
  • X/Y radial vibration at the bearings (vibration diagnostics) in order to achieve the best balance at operating speed as well as to minimize deflection and vibration amplitudes during ramp up and coast down

Equipment will run at lower vibration levels, which helps maintain the reliability of the equipment.

Benefits of at-speed balancing:

  • Ensures correct axial placement of static and couple balance corrections to reduce the response at both critical and running speeds
  • Offers the opportunity to relieve assembly stress, or “relax” the rotor by operating under full centrifugal stress prior to balancing
  • Eliminates the need for expensive field balancing

High-Speed Balancing

Before undertaking high-speed balancing of rotors, you should consider the conditions whereby it is required. This technique is appropriate for rotors which:

Have exhibited high vibration as they pass through their critical speeds

  • Accelerate slowly through their critical speeds
  • Run at or near critical speed
  • Are sensitive to unbalance
  • Are for equipment in extremely critical services
  • Are destined for inaccessible locations such as offshore facilities
  • Are flexible and very long

High-speed balancing is also used in places where a critical rotor cannot be run in its intended casing prior to installation.

Our operational speed bunker can accommodate turbomachinery up to 30 ft (9 m) in length, 10 ft (3 m) in diameter, and up to 50,000 lbs (25 tons) in a vacuum chamber.

Our facility can balance generator rotors up to 39 ft (12 m) in length and 100,000 lbs (50 tons) in weight at speeds up to 5,200 rpm.
