DynaSand filters enable rejuvenation of wastewater treatment plant and supply of irrigation waterCountries in the Middle East face a constant challenge with delivering sufficient water for an increasing population, both for drinking water and irrigation for agriculture. In Bahrain, the largest water treatment works in the country has undergone a huge redevelopment and Nordic Water, a Sulzer brand, has retrofitted the original sand filter basins with DynaSand filters. This, together with a recent expansion of the filtration systems, has enabled the plant to treat 250’000 m3 /day for irrigation, the equivalent of 100 Olympic swimming pools every day.

New larger screenings compactor cuts costs for Swedish wastewater treatment plantAt the heart of the water cycle is the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), which has the unenviable task of removing all the waste products and debris before the water is returned to the local environment. Operators aim to maximize efficiency and reduce operating costs where possible, while still meeting the high water quality standards required by local and national legislation. At a WWTP in Sweden, the municipality had already replaced the existing fine screens and recently also changed the compactor systems, which has delivered considerable savings in terms of energy efficiency and maintenance costs.

Removing pharmaceuticals from water suppliesThe current EU Urban Wastewater Treatment Directive is more than 30 years old, and it has made dramatic improvements to the water quality in European rivers, lakes and seas. However, several pollution challenges remain and are not covered by the current legislation. One of the most prominent is pharmaceutical residues, which are having a detrimental effect on wildlife and human health, leading to a revision of EU Directive 91/271/EEC.
